All the stories in the Fairy in the Bed series are set in the same world, and characters tend to pop up in one another's stories. Here are some of the people you'll meet, along with their relationships and the books in which they appear. Main characters appear in UPPER CASE, the first time they’re mentioned. Major or supporting characters in Normal Case. They are grouped alphabetically by first name, because some of them don't use surnames.

Adkins Perry (Hob) Landlord of The Pear Tree pub in Silent Park, Sydney. A hob who rules his pub with a firm hand. Son or grandson of Leo Perry. The Pear Tree, Queen of the May
Ailsa McDonald: braeside woman Nelis meets in The Pear Tree. Wife of Stuart and something of a busybody, she annoys Xavier Partridge by discussing his failings in public.
Ajay Kahn (human) Stepfather of George Dark, husband of Sarah Kahn and father of Ranjeet Kahn. A joey scout leader who enjoys boating and fishing. Tied up in Tinsel, Counterpoint series
Akaroa; Betony’s name for the man she knows as The islander in Betony Buys Adventure. She borrowed the name from a hero in the Lost Island series (QV).
Alan Adair (Fay: Braefolk) Born in the mid-1940s and works as a barman in a nightclub called Kaleidoscope in the late 1960s. In love with Marguerite du Fen and attends the Midsummer Ball at Skipton Manor. Later he’s married to Maggie and the grandfather of Alys Adair. Midsummer Melody, The Kissing Ring, Alys by Night
Alannah (fay: leprechaun) Cousin of Kieran Shamrock. Old acquaintance of Hamish McTavish. Floribunda and the Best Men
Alba Tillien Willow (Fay- pixie miss) Younger sister of Pia Peckerdale. Married to Farran Willow, and the mother of Cambria Willow; thus Cèilidh Acushla’s grandmother. Peter and Pia, Peter G and Gentian
Alaric Bellaine. Court halfling married to Valeria Hall. Father of Ruth Bellaine Warrener who runs a Vouch-Safe guesthouse with her husband, Hal.
Alexis Peckerdale: (fay, pixie) Grandfather of Peter Peckerdale. Married to Jewel Leilana. Quarrelsome, and a gem expert. He went to the star pin to get gems for Jewel’s betrothal ring. Peter and Pia
Alexander Peckerdale (fay: pixie) Third child and second son of Peter and Pia, brother of Melody, Kris and Leilana. A gaylord, whose lover is Oison Seekjoy, a leprechaun gossoon. Alex has green eyes and an attractive crooked smile. Father of Quinn Peckerdale and father by love of Cèilidh Acushla. A good friend of Tom Merriweather. The Kissing Ring, Seeking Joy, I Promise, Peter G and Gentian
Alicia McFee (half fay: court/human) Mother of Skye McFee. Wife of Eddie. Fair-skinned and elegant, superior, cool and judgmental. A celebrity model/actor in the 1980s. The Wish-Match, Pisky Business
Alice and Meg – (human). Foster parents of Betony Field in Betony Busy Adventure. Died in a flu epidemic when Betony was seventeen. Mac Tilley knew them, which may have influenced his decision to employ Betony
Alice Fillion; A cousin of Caroline de Libre, on her mother’s side. Her mother has remarried to a leprechaun halfling named Patrick Barley, and they live at Erin a’ Fee. Marcella de Libre selects Alice as a possible bride for Ancel, but she has chosen someone else; a leprechaun man named Tyrone Scarlet. Ancel discovers this in a somewhat embarrassing fashion. Under the Christmas Tree.
Alister McTavish (fay: braefolk with a laird manifest). Eldest son of Lachlan and Jenny McTavish, brother of Glengarry, Hamish and Sean. Married. Grandson of Nairn and Cromarty McTavish. Floribunda and the Best Men, The Courting of Eileen.
Alsace Hardy: (human) eldest child of Brooke and Pierre Hardy. Philippa calls him Al. Born the year of Philippa’s marriage to Sebastian – 1993 – and thus a few months older than Court. The Counterpoint series
Alys Adair (fairy: court/Braesider mix) Granddaughter of Alan and Marguerite, meets Tango Merriweather in Alys by Night
Alyssa Curry: Classmate of Nelis Winter, and not a very nice person. Her school boyfriend is Ryan Besnik. The Pear Tree
Amalie de Courcy (fay: court fay) 15-year-old daughter of Kit St Clair and Rafe de Courcy. Sister of Godfrey. Potential pupil at Forever. Sam and the Sylvan. Appears as a seventeen-year-old in Man Overboard and participates in the kidnapping of Promise Grene in I Promise. Performs at the Counterpoint Festival. Tim Merriweather’s dancing partner and kissing-ring-girl.
Amber Pearl Inkersoll: Youngest child of Rory and Emer; younger sister of Davey and Andorie. Strawberry blonde hair and two-coloured eyes; one amber and one blue. The Red Cat series. Born at Erin a’ Fee and lives there as an adult.
Amaryllis Geranium Trip (half fay: hob/human) Daughter of Geraint Trip and Mary Canterbury Trip, half-sister of Linda Hobbs, half-aunt of Laura Pendennis and her brother Jamie. Amaryllis is small and blonde and pretty, like Mary. She sings with the group Even the Dog at the Counterpoint Festival Pisky Business, Counterpoint

Andorie Inkersoll. (fay) Elder daughter of Rory and Emer, twin of Davey and elder sister of Amber. She has a silver pisky bracelet set with charms that jingle on several notes. Weds the ship xxx A danz damar or sea dancer. Has tawny hair, draws and sings. The Red Cat series
Andre Skipton (fay court) Roderick’s father. Married to Cecily Midsummer Melody, mentioned in The Kissing Ring
Anemone Rose: runs V-SR (Vouch-Safe Roses) Queen of the May Connected with John Folly through his wife’s family. Her grandfather is Sixten Rose.
Annabel Verhoven (human) Mish’s mother in The Kissing Ring. A veritable Mrs Robinson with a penchant for taking trophies. She propositions Russ Merriweather, his son Tom and Tom’s friend Simon Bakewell before settling on a man named Bell who was looking for someone else.
Anne Lavender (human) A widowed client Linda Hobbs drives for Vouch-Safe. Pisky Business
Angelica Darby: A pixie miss in the forest who likes cats. Kris Peckerdale helps civilise her queen’s kittens Peter G and Gentian
Annie (human) the community watch leader. Number 16 Ridgeway Road. Mentioned in Pen and Ink
Annie Inkersoll (scatterblood – dec.) Mother of Rory, who died when he was ten. AKA Miss Rose. The Red Cat brown hair, going grey, and hazel eyes. She wore a tiny wooden rose around her neck and played a wooden whistle.

Annya Charming: Mathias Charming’s niece. The Red Cat series
The arcadian (fay – possibly herdfolk/herdfee) The man Betony meets on Arcadia Island. He is compact and strong with a black beard and curly black hair. He wears natural linen clothing and has a great love of fun. He is on good terms with a herd of fay goats. Betony Buys Adventure
Argent Amore (fay horse) The grey steed belonging to the summerman in Isle o’ Samhradh. His dam was a supposed Connemara pony named Blessed, and his sire a cloud stepper. His sister is the cream mare, Galathe Desire. He has another sibling—the golden filly. Under the Christmas Tree and Betony Buys Adventure. Possibly related to Fash and Glory-Be.
Asha Levi (human) Gay college friend of Honeycomb Bakewell and Mab O'Mara. Appears briefly in Honey and the Harvest Hob and is mentioned in Man Overboard. Zach Rowan sees her as one of his Blue Moon girls; the Persian Princess. She appears in Queen of the May.
Ashby Cottman (hob/pixie/court/human mix) Son of Honey Bakewell and Robin “Hob” Cottman, born in late 2016. Man Overboard Elder brother of Harry and Eriskay
Ashling Shamrock (fay: beech maid with leprechaun father) Second child of Kieran Shamrock and Tally Beech. Talented fiddle player. The Courting of Eileen, mentioned in Sunshower. Later styles herself Ashling Everdance
Asht (fay: sylvan) Father of Oash and mother of Koh, Oaka’s forever. Grandmother of Koh’s child. Sam and the Sylvan An acquaintance of Annie Inkersoll.
August “Augie” Herron (fay: elf) Art teacher, counsellor at Diversity High, and sponsor of Xavier Partridge. Husband of Lorelei (Oak) Herron, father of Bethlehem and Gianetta. The Pear Tree, Queen of the May Works for Vouch-Safe part time.

Babette du Fen (fairy: court) five years elder cousin of Marguerite. Married to a summerman. Midsummer Melody and Midsummer Maggie
Baptista Fanshaw (halfling) Fourth daughter of Nanette Leopold Fanshaw and her human husband Daniel Fanshaw. Sister of Chentille, Lace and Paola and half-sister of Court Leopold. Born in September 2020. Counterpoint series
Baptiste Leopold (fay: courtfolk) Grandfather of Nanette Leopold Fanshaw and great-grandfather of Court. Died when Court was fourteen. Court inherited his braeside wool cloak and Nanette inherited his fief ring. Counterpoint series
Barbie Hanover le Fay (human) Human lover of Peter Peckerdale before he married Pia. They fell out over the pixie grip. Barbie later married a "nice elf man from Sydney". Sam and the Sylvan whose name is revealed as Jacobi le Fay in The Pixie Grip. Mother of Pandora, Carolyn and Jakin le Fay.
Barrett Jones (human) Husband of Sherry Silver, stepfather of Sam. Sam and the Sylvan
Bartholomeus “Bart” Merriweather (human). Son of Dennis and Marieke. Tom’s cousin, born around 1964. Large and blond, studying horticulture o/s in October 1986. Skipper of the yacht Tulpenmanie and married to alpenfee mädchen Brigitta since 1993. Father of Fabienne, Sabrina and Jasper. The Kissing Ring, Man Overboard, Northern Lights
Father Baskerton: (fay) The bishop before Matt Charming. “Older than any man has a right to be,” according to Jago Pendennis. The Red Cat
Beatrice Hammett Penn Florin Inkersoll (fay; pisky) Widowed fairy living temporarily in Summerleigh Grange. Leaves there after her friend dies. A friend of Emer Drumwiddy and second wife of Rory Inkersoll. Sunshower, The Red Cat. Beatrice was born Beatrice Hammett in 1945 to Perren Hammett and his wife Chesten, the elder daughter of Jago and Emblyn Pendennis and her man.
She married 43-y-old pisky man Goren Penn in 1965. He died in 1995
She married human Sam Florin in 1996 and he died in 2015
Becca – (fay – tree maid/water maid) Tam’s daughter by Moss, the Beechmaster. Half-sister of Tane and Whim and Rye, Lee and Finn.
Belinda Dane (fay, hob): Belinda, aka Granny Belinda, is Chess Dane’s paternal grandmother, a widow. According to Chess she keeps casual company with at least two leprechaun gossoons on visits over there. Counterpoint
Belle Jessup (nee Fraser) (human) Chloe Fraser's much older adopted sister. Daughter of Abbie and Paul (dec) Sam and the Silvan
Ben Swan (human) Deceased husband of Pen Swan. Illustrator, died in his late thirties of brain cancer. Allergic to cats and some flowers. Friend of Si Bakewell and Noel Pattinson. Appears briefly in Pen and Ink
Berryman Grene (fay: pixie) father of Quercus Grene and Jestima Grene. Married to Clover Garth. A parson, kind and practical. Guardian of Rory Inkersoll, when his mother died, and tutored him. Grandfather to Peter Peckerdale and to Salix Peter Grene. The Red Cat Born around 1885
Berte Haller (alpenfee) Friend of Gerda Kinsinger: mädchen at The Pear Tree in 1960. Related to the Bless family. Works sometimes at Der Kaffeetanz, which is run by her aunt, Liesl Bless. Knows Jacobi and Barbie.
Bertold: goat from Peter’s flock in the early 1950s.
Bess (human) Married with a son and daughter. Elder sister of Mab O'Mara. Earthy sense of humour. Friend of Frances Eckmann. Appears briefly in Horizontal Bunnyhop and mentioned in Pen and Ink
Bess: Lead role in the musical play Queen of the May, turned down by Lucy Tan.
Beth – Shari’s sister in Calico Calypso. In 1986 she’s a dancer at The Cats’ Pyjamas under the stage name Lulu
Bethlehem Herron: (fay; elf). Younger daughter of Augie and Lorelei. Sister of Gianetta.
BETONY FIELD. Foundling fostered by two women who died when she was seventeen. Worked for Mac Tilley and eventually bought a voucher from Vouch-Safe and fell in love with Foss Chancery
Bettina "Bets" (human) Assistant to Flori at BBB (Big Beautiful Blossoms) Floribunda and the Best Men
Betula "Granny Bets" Grene Bakewell (nee Grene) (half-fay with pixie father, Portier Grene) Joe Bakewell's mother. Has a brother named Birch living over there. The Wish-Match, The Kissing Ring, Peter G and Gentian.
Birch Grene (half-fay- pixie) Betula’s brother. Lives over there with his pixie wife Casha. Has two adult children (including Cineria) and “a swarm” of grandchildren. Si and Skye go to visit them. The Kissing Ring
Blessed: (fay horse – supposedly a Connemara pony, but actually a kelpie). A mare from Erin a’ Fee, who refused any sire other than the cloud stepper. Her known foals are Argent Amore and Galathe Desire and an unnamed golden filly. Quite likely related to Fash and just possibly to Glory-Be.
Bluebell: (fairy) A stable hob who is a friend and tutor/lover of Ancel de Libre. Under the Christmas Tree
Bonnie Jean Silverman. Sylvan quarterling. Born 1823 but claims 1838. Married James Glasgow 1. (human) Children Elsie and James. A distant ancestor of both Duffy and Pen.
The Boy (mostly human with a possible fay great grandmother) College mate of Mab O'Mara, Honey Bakewell and Asha Levi. Asks Honey to the prom, but ends up taking Mab. Hob Cottman opines he might have been a fairy. Appears in Honey and the Harvest Hob main character (as Zach Rowan) of Man Overboard
Bran (bull calf) Son of Cushla, associates with Oash the sylvan. Relocated to a new home at Crock o’ Gold. Sam and the Sylvan
Brandon Fen: (fay; pixie) Husband of Autumn May, father of Russet Fen
Brendan Miller (fay: leprechaun) The miller at Crock o’ Gold from whom LeeLee Grene got her cat, Millie. The Kissing Ring

Brooke: (human) aka Daycare-Brooke. Married to Philippa Hackney’s first husband, Pierre Hardy and the mother of the seven second-Hardys. A nice woman. Counterpoint
Caden Marsh (half fay: pisky/human) Youngest son of Keeley Weir and Drew Marsh. Pisky Business. In Counterpoint he’s courting Laura Pendennis
Calum Folly: (human) First husband of Elsie Glasgow. Runaway marriage, emigrated to Australia, and died there.
Callum Mcdonald –Brother of Cat Chaucer and Douglas Mcdonald, one of the men who helps build Emer’s house.
CALYPSO LINDON (fay: colleen/ mutable fay) Exotic dancer who manifests as a calico tortoiseshell cat with different-coloured eyes; one amber and one sea green. This form is known as Mistress Calico. Sweetheart of Kris Peckerdale in The Kissing Ring, meets him in Calico Calypso, and mentioned (as his wife) in Sam and the Sylvan and as the mother of Corin and Jisinia in Man Overboard.
Cambria Willow (Fay- pixie miss) Daughter of Alba Tillien Willow and her husband Farran. Cèilidh Acushla’s mother.
Cameron Dougal: braesider. An old and current flame of Fee’s in Queen of the May. A noisy and boisterous braeman in his early fifties. Father of Flora Mackie’s son.
Camille Hardy : (human) son of Brooke and Pierre Hardy. One of the second-Hardys. Philippa calls him Cam. Born 1995 Counterpoint
Camlan Clover (fay: leppy) Great-great grandfather of the gossoon. It was said he was so green he couldn’t sleep in shamrock for fear the Connemara cobs would think he was clover. Betony Buys Adventure

Carey (Phillips): (human) A camper at Ferris Island. She wants to stay. Queen of the May
Cari. A leprechaun woman married to a quarterling in Camden Town. She sponsored Maura Dervla, who refers to her as Darlin’ Cari. Under the Christmas Tree
Carol Charming: (Hob halfling). Second daughter of Mathias and Hazel. Born around 1947. Sister of Nancy and Pauline The Red Cat
Caroline de Libre – cousin of Ancel, some years older, and fond of him. Under the Christmas Tree. He gives her a cob for her children.

Casha Grene (fay- pixie) Lives over there with her half-pixie husband Birch. Has two adult children and “a swarm” of grandchildren. Si and Skye visit her. The Kissing Ring
Castor (fay – waterfolk) Son of Plie and Poll. Brother of Leander.
Catharine Leopold. (fay: courtfolk: dec.) Daughter of Baptiste and Fleur, married a distant cousin. Nanette’s mother. She danced at a ball with Joe Bakewell when he was young. Died in an accident over here when Nanette was four or five. A happy person. Counterpoint
Catriona Mcdonald Chaucer: friend of Emer Drumwiddy, wife of Humphrey Chaucer
The Cavalier (human- mostly) supergroupie in Court in Between. Twin brother of The Musketeer and brother of Marie Antoinette. Real name Frans Hardy
Cecily Le Porte Skipton (fay – court) Wife of Andre Skipton- Ryl’s maternal grandmother
Cèilidh Acushla: daughter of Oison and Cambria Tillien. Friend of Eileen. A happy, bubbling person who talks a mile a minute. “Sister” of Quinn. Love Began at Christmas
Chance Grene (pixie) son of Birch and Casha. Brother of Cineria.
CHARLES “CHAS” DARK (human). Father of George, renting the gateway terrace for Christmas 2017 at which time he meets Flick Echo. Tied up in Tinsel By Counterpoint, he’s married to Flick and expecting a baby. Middle Dark child, mother dec. 2017. Elder sister Vivienne, younger brother Henry. Mentioned in The Pear Tree as the owner, with Flick, of The Dark Room café. Father of Joyful Dark.
Charlotte Dearly: (Fay, elf) A friendlie of Otto Fairling whom Nelis encounters at The Pear Tree. Works with a dance troupe. Is “married” to him in Queen of the May.

Chentille Fanshaw (court/human halfling) Eldest daughter of Nanette Leopold Fanshaw and Daniel Fanshaw. Sister of Lace, Paola and Baptista, half-sister of Court Leopold. Paints… but not abstracts like her father. Favours pink unicorns. Clever and talented, dark with narrow eyes and a dimple. Counterpoint
Cherie Tan: mostly human. Original name Chen Qin. Lucy Tan’s mother, married to Adam “An” Tan, daughter of Juliana Qin.
Cherry and Pie (cats) A tux and a tabby, belonging to Frances Eckmann and Niall Le Fay. Appear in Hot Summer Knight mentioned in Christmas Eve
Cherry (a car) A 1956 Chevy, nicknamed by Peck Grene. Appears briefly in Green Balls
Chess Dane (Hob hybrid) Placid husband of Jordana, brother in law of Gem. Court thinks he is a closet hob, but he’s fully aware of his quarterling blood. He claims to be from Cabramatta. Runs a music studio called Indichord. Has a grandmother named Granny Belinda. Counterpoint
Chesten Pendennis Hammett: (pisky). Elder daughter of Jago and Emblyn Pendennis, mother of Beatrice, wife of Perren. Half sister of Enyon Weir, sister of Penzance and Truro.
CHLOE FRASER GRENE (human) Works in an office not far from Peckerdale Grene Community Tower. In her twenties. Wears green, has a green Mazda 2. Has a hapless friend named Josefa “Jojo” McCord who drives a yellow ute. Works at Barnett & Sanderson. Wish-match and lover of Peck Grene. Engaged to him in Sam and the Sylvan and marries him in I Promise. Major character in Green Balls, appears in Sam and the Sylvan and mentioned frequently in Pen and Ink. Dancing flower girl at Pen and Duffy’s wedding in Floribunda and the Best Men. Mentioned in Sunshower and Man Overboard, appears briefly in Court in Between.
Chris Peters (human). Married to Tess, father of her baby. Brother of Jake and Jenna, best man at Jake’s abortive wedding to Honeycomb Bakewell. Appears in Honey and the Harvest Hob
Christopher Robin. Deek Caffrey’s name for Kris Peckerdale, Calico Calypso and I Promise
Ciaran Greentree: later name of Ciaran Shamrock.
Ciaran Shamrock (fay – halfling leprechaun/treefolk) third child and elder son of Kieran and Tally. Brother of Colm, Ashling and Sinead. Later chose the name Ciaran Greentree
Cineria Grene: Daughter of Birch and Casha Grene. Embroiderer. Spent some time with Magda Quest in the 1960s.
Claire Sorensen: (galleonfee) daughter of Magnus and Nadia, sister of Leif and Key, granddaughter of the Unicorn master, Clevis Andree and his wife Selka.
Clarice Hall: Human. Wife of halfling Gilford Hall in 1962. Runs the Marram Hall Hostel in Marram. Daughters named Glenyis, Valeria and Lynnonie, one of whom is Ruth Warrener’s mother.
Clevis Andree, Master of Unicorn in 1959. His wife is Selka. Their daughter, Nadia, marries Magnus and becomes Leif’s mother.
Clover Garth (fay: pixie miss) mother of Quercus Grene. Married to Berryman Grene. Appears in The Red Cat
Coco (human) dark haired dancer at Cats’ Pyjamas. Calico Calypso
Colin; a lutist, a companion of Ferris Island Queen of the May

Colm Shamrock (fay – halfling leprechaun/treefolk) fourth child and younger son of Kieran and Tally. Brother of Ciaran, Ashling and Sinead. Later chose the name Colm Haygreen
Conwenna Tregowan: Pisky maid. Mother of Merryn Pendennis by her husband Truro
Cordelia Persimmon: (fay, courtfolk). Mother of Xanthe, Indigo, Violet, Sage, Rouge and Azure. Wife of Rupert. Xanthe and the Seaman
Corin Peckerdale (fay: Pixie/leprechaun-muti mix) Elder brother of Jisinia… son of Kris and Calypso, dancing partner (as of 2018) of Richenda Pendennis. Man Overboard. Promise Grene’s favourite cousin in I Promise. Having a bit of a crisis regarding Richenda in Counterpoint from which he is rescued by Louise Hardy. Has different coloured eyes, and smells of figs. Manages Thymelines Gallery for his father. Kind and sweet-natured, like his cousin Quinn, but a bit more worldly. Deek Caffrey nicknames him Thunderfist in I Promise.
Corinna Connemara Lindon (fay: leprechaun colleen) Mother of Calypso Lindon, sister of Padraig Horseshoe. Wish Matched, Man Overboard. Corin Peckerdale was named after her. Dancer at the Cats Pyjamas in the 1950s
